Beginner gym machine workout: a full-body routine
By wrkoutPublished
For your first gym sessions, a short list of machines gives you something concrete to follow. This full-body routine uses a leg press, chest press, seated row, leg curl and lat pulldown. Complete two sets of each exercise, resting 60–90 seconds between sets. Start with a weight you can control for every repetition.
- Equipment
- Five gym machines
- Time to allow
- About 30–40 minutes
- Format
- Sets and reps
Before you start
Walk or cycle gently for five minutes, then try a light practice set on the first machine. Ask for a seat and pad adjustment demonstration: settings differ between machines. Finish all sets on one machine before moving on. If a station is busy, do another exercise from the list and return later; there is no need to reserve several machines at once.
These are general starting routines for adults, with suggested targets you can adjust. Use a comfortable range of movement and stop if an exercise causes pain. Ask gym staff to show unfamiliar equipment before using it.
Your workout, in order
Leg press
2 sets of 8–12 reps
Set the seat so you can bend your knees comfortably. Keep your feet flat on the platform and avoid locking your knees at the top.
Chest press machine
2 sets of 8–12 reps
Adjust the seat so the handles sit around chest height. Keep your back against the pad and press smoothly, without shrugging your shoulders.
Seated row machine
2 sets of 8–12 reps
Sit tall and pull your elbows back towards your sides. Return the handles slowly without rocking your torso forwards and backwards.
Seated leg curl
2 sets of 8–12 reps
Align the machine pivot with your knee and secure the thigh pad. Bend your knees slowly, then control the return.
Lat pulldown
2 sets of 8–12 reps
Pull the bar towards the top of your chest with your elbows moving down. Keep your torso steady and let the bar rise under control.
How to progress
Keep the same weights until both sets reach 12 controlled reps. At a later session, try the smallest available increase and return towards eight reps. Record the machine settings as well as the weight: a different seat position can change how an exercise feels. Repeat on two non-consecutive days if recovery allows.
Questions about this routine
What weight should a beginner use on gym machines?
There is no universal starting number. Try a light setting and choose a load that leaves you able to do a couple more controlled reps at the end of the set. Machine weight labels are not directly comparable between brands.
Can I start with one set of each exercise?
Yes. Use one set to learn the equipment and check how you recover. Add the second set when the routine feels manageable. Familiarity and repeatable technique matter more than finishing every suggested set on day one.
