Hotel gym dumbbell workout for a short stay
By wrkoutPublished
A hotel gym may have a small dumbbell rack and little else. Use this four-movement workout to keep a familiar training pattern while travelling: squat, hinge, press and row. Do two sets of each, resting 60–90 seconds between sets. The plan uses a floor press, so a missing bench does not stop the session.

Before you start
Check the available weights and find a clear area before warming up. After a long journey or poor sleep, use lighter loads or one set of each movement. Begin with five minutes of easy walking and a few practice repetitions. If there is no clean, suitable floor area, replace the floor press with incline push-ups using a sturdy raised surface.
These are general starting routines for adults, with suggested targets you can adjust. Use a comfortable range of movement and stop if an exercise causes pain. Ask gym staff to show unfamiliar equipment before using it.
Your workout, in order
Goblet squat
2 sets of 8–12 reps
Hold the weight close to your chest. Sit down between your hips to a comfortable depth, keeping your heels on the floor, then stand tall.
Stiff-Legged Dumbbell Deadlift
2 sets of 8–12 reps
Soften your knees and move your hips backwards. Keep the weights close to your legs and stop before your back starts to round.
Dumbbell floor press
2 sets of 8–12 reps
Lie on a mat with knees bent. Lower the weights until your upper arms gently touch the floor, then press up without bouncing.
Dumbbell bent-over row
2 sets of 8–12 reps
Hinge at your hips with soft knees and a steady back. Pull your elbows towards your hips, then lower slowly. Use lighter weights if you cannot hold the position.
How to progress
Treat this as a travel session rather than a test of your usual gym numbers. Record the actual dumbbells used, and add a note if they differ from home. With light weights, work towards the upper rep target using a steady lowering phase. Return to your normal programme when you are home and recovered instead of adding extra sessions to compensate.
Questions about this routine
What if the hotel dumbbells are too light?
Use the upper end of the rep range and control each lowering phase. You may get a useful practice session without matching the challenge of your usual equipment. Avoid turning every set into an exhausting effort just to make a light weight feel heavy.
Should I train on the day I arrive?
Base it on how you feel and how much you have slept. A walk or a shorter session may fit better after a tiring journey. The routine will still be here the following day.
